Guy Fawkes Night | Monday Nov 05, 2007
The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, or the Powder Treason, as it was known at the time, was a failed attempt by a group of provincial English Catholics to kill King James I of England, his family, and most of the Protestant aristocracy in a single attack by blowing up the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening. Guy Fawkes, one of it's protagonists was hanged, drawn, and quartered for his treason against the crown.
Every year we mark this event buy burning effigies of the man on big bonfires, and then set off fireworks to simulate the explosions that would have taken place had the enormous cache of gunpowder hidden under the buildings been ignited.
