OK, so I didn't press the shutter release, my wonderful niece, Sigrid did that, but I set the shot up. This was taken whilst I was on a job last weekend photographing a Confirmation for a friend at a beautiful place called Hotell Refsnes Gods in Moss just outside Oslo. It's not often I stand on the other side of the camera these days (no wise cracks thank you).

I saw a comment on yesterday's image by Bonny Fitzmaurice which brought back memories of a trip to Liverpool a few years ago where I met a beer-drinking dog at The Baltic Exchange. The dog's owner, Ian Fitzmaurice (brother of the Actor/Writer Neil) was there having a lunchtime drink with his daughter Heidi and we chatted and they generously allowed me to take some photos. I've never met a dog that drinks beer quicker than I do, but Maxi did! So, this is for the Fitzmaurices...

Two content children automatically avoid one of the female beggars you can be found dotted around the city centre of Oslo, highly organised and often guarded by the men (from afar). Many dissaprove of this in Oslo, and politicians have gone as far as to demand them registered on a database. The same beggars can often be seen on the streets of Bergen, Stavanger, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmö, Copenhagen and have taken advantage of the lax security on public transport between these areas...

April Fools Day? Meh. Not in Oslo, not in Norway well except for the Police putting out the word that a lorry had turned over spilling leg of lamb and various types of BBQ meat and could not be sold so was being given away free. Imagine that...the fuzz showing a sense of humour. No, otherwise it's off to the terraces! Sun and cold is a Norwegian's ideal combo at around this time of year. It means the good weather is here but the snow's not going JUST yet. The die hard Norwegian is gearing up for the Easter charge to the mountains to say a final farewell to the ski season and the last of the snow before the sun takes over completely. Until then it's Cafe Latte, Sunday Papers, and a tanned forhead. Happy April Fool's Day!!

We were lucky enough to be invited up to my sister-in-law's winter cabin in the fantastic winter holiday resort of Beitostølen (Øystre Slidre - Oppland). The place had 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a sauna, and was more luxurious than our own appartment! This is the view over Raudhorn from the balcony.

This is our christmas tree for 2012, and very pretty it is too. Dressed by my youngest daughter, with generous help from my eldest, and their mum the tree stands resplendant. At night, before sloping off to bed, I still like to switch off all the lights and bask in its delicate glow. I become a child again, staring with the eyes of a child, and still believing 100% in the myth of Santa Claus. Standing there, marveling at the sight, I feel safe, warm, loved, and blessed.

I wish the same for all of you at this time of year, when many do not and/or cannot.

Kaiser Chiefs came to Oslo last week and played a fairly tame gig, to a fairly tame audience (what else would you find in Oslo?). Visually uninspiring, as are many bands nowadays, it seems giving the minimum is what's called for among the UK's top bands when they are on tour. Is this a reflection of the times we are living in? Seriously people, if you think it's just about the music, then you are shockingly wrong....

The leaves are changing colour quickly as is the weather, and the temperature. Here in Oslo Autumn and Spring are short phases in the changing of the seasons, not protracted affairs as they can be in more temperate climes. I've seen green leaves literally fall from trees overnight due to rapid temperature change at this time of year, and it can seem brutal, sometimes I take it personally not being from these parts. I tend to dread the coming of winter and all it's challenges, but this year seems to be more of a challenge than most...probably because it's the first time I've been really broke. Ah well good times are coming...I hope.

Today, in fact right now, Norway officially grieves for it's lost souls. The children and adults murdered in the atrocities of 22.07.2011. A tragedy of indescribable depth took place on that afternoon, but today we take the first steps into a new future, seeing it with new eyes and new ideas and beliefs, or even unchanged but strengthened principles that we only weakly held ourselves to before. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those whose lives were forever changed on that day, may they find the strength to come through the next months and years. For some, I fear it will be a long, long journey...

This rock forms part of a photographic exhibition outside the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo including photography from war-torn regions of the world. I chose to use the words on this rock to send a message to Anders Behring Breivik and people of his ilk. They are not the future of Norway, neither do they speak for nor represent the ideals it's people hold. We will not hate, we will not become them...no matter what they do.

I met this guy on my way back from Oslo city center last Friday. It had been an emotional day, many tears and a welcome reunion with some friends I seldom see. I was feeling a little raw, and tearful when I heard the sound of a banjo (which never fails to perk me up funnily enough). A few yards more and here stands this guy with his one-man-band attempting to put a smile back on the faces of those, like me, who were a little bewildered and in need of a hug. Well this guys musical hug did the trick, and I thank him with all my heart for his kind, warming tones.

Walking round looking at all the extremely moving tributes in the grounds of the Domkirke in Oslo, I think this was the one that actually got me to weep without thought of reservation. The words say (written in the hand of a young child), "This is to the deceased to comfort them og follow them up to heaven...", and as I write this the tears come unbidden once more.

Lill and I travelled to Liverpool yesterday to observe the minute's silence at the Scandinavian Church. Wierdly nothing was going on and the place was shut, not that we cared, it was the place we wanted to be. We stood side by side, silently, thinking our thoughts and weeping for the life lost.

This was taken on a recent trip to Central Pier in Blackpool, and is the view to South Pier through the bar at the end. It's an odd but kind of poignant image with the silhouette of the woman on the other side of the bar. Blackpool is a town struggling to rediscover itself.

A hipstamatic style photo of a mini sunflower that came back from the dead. My daughter came home from school with this flower, stem broken and suffering. I took care of it, and nursed it back to health, the stem even healed itself! Nature is a wonderful thing... you can buy this here
